QUANG TRI TARGETS 6,000 MW WIND POWER CAPACITY BOOST

The central province of Quang Tri is seeking the Government’s approval to expand its wind power capacity by an additional 1,500-2,000 MW for onshore projects and 2,600-4,000 MW for offshore projects, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Currently, Quang Tri is home to 31 wind power projects, primarily located in the mountainous districts of Huong Hoa and Dakrong. To date, 20 projects, with a combined capacity of 740 MW, have begun commercial operations.

However, 11 projects, totaling 424 MW, remain under development, facing delays due to grid connection challenges and unresolved technical agreements within the power sector.

In recent months, investor interest has grown in offshore wind power opportunities, particularly near Con Co Island and the coastal areas of Hai Lang District.

Promoting wind, solar, and gas-fired power investments is a priority for Quang Tri as it pursues its goal of becoming a central Vietnam energy hub by 2030. The province aims to achieve a total energy capacity of 9,000–10,000 MW as part of its broader energy development strategy.

As part of its energy transition efforts, Quang Tri has also proposed converting the Quang Tri 1 BOT coal-fired power plant into a liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant.

This shift is expected to enhance environmental protection while leveraging existing infrastructure, including the Hai Khe resettlement area, which has received an investment of over VND250 billion for resident relocation.

The Quang Tri 1 BOT coal-fired power plant, invested in by Thailand’s Electricity Generating Authority (EGAT), was designed with a capacity of 1,320 MW and a total investment of over VND55,000 billion.

Construction began in 2019 in Hai Khe Commune, Hai Lang District, but the project encountered significant difficulties and was halted in 2024.
