VIETNAM TO SUPPORT 300,000 SMES IN DIGITAL AND AI ADOPTION
At least 300,000 firms will receive support for advanced technology adoption under a 2026-2030 SME digital transformation project recently approved by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh. The project aims to support 500,000 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by 2030 at all activities, including at least 300,000 firms that will adopt digital solutions, platforms, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

At the Vietnam Economic Forum 2026, organised by the Vietnam Institute of Economics and World Economy under the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Nguyen Duc Hien, Deputy Head of the Party’s Policy and Strategy Commission, said the Politburo has tasked the commission with drafting a new development framework based on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation.

This is part of the semiconductor industry development strategy and the human resource development programme for the Vietnamese semiconductor industry in Ho Chi Minh City, issued in early March by Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee. It aims to effectively implement the semiconductor industry development strategy and the human resource development programme for the semiconductor industry and core digital technologies such as AI, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, Big Data, and Blockchain, making the city a leading centre in this industry.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SECTOR REPORTS STRONG JANUARY GROWTH
The science and technology sector posted strong growth in January, with total revenue estimated at more than VNĐ464.1 trillion (nearly US$6.2 billion), up 23.3 per cent from the same period last year, the Ministry of Science and Technology said on Thursday. The sector’s contribution to the country's gross domestic product was estimated at VNĐ124.1 trillion, an increase of 33.3 per cent year-on-year, according to figures released at the ministry’s regular monthly press conference chaired by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Bùi Hoàng Phương.
VIETNAM PUTS SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AT CENTER OF 2026 GROWTH STRATEGY
Vietnam will make science and technology, innovation and digital transformation the core drivers of economic growth in 2026, under a Government resolution guiding this year’s socio-economic development and budget implementation. The direction is set out in Resolution No. 01 on key tasks and solutions for 2026, reported the Government news website (baochinhphu.vn).
COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONICS TOP VIETNAM’S IMPORT REVENUE
According to preliminary data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, imports of this product group are expected to total US$149.4 billion by the end of 2025, up about US$42.3 billion from 2024. This marks the largest import value ever recorded for a single commodity group. By comparison, exports of computers, electronic products and components are estimated at more than US$106 billion in 2025.
VIETNAM’S DIGITAL ECONOMY FORECAST AT US$39 BILLION IN 2025
Vietnam’s digital economy is expected to reach US$39 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) by 2025, making it the second-fastest-growing market in Southeast Asia, according to the e-Conomy SEA 2025 report jointly released by Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company. The report highlights Vietnam as the regional leader in AI readiness and consumer trust, with 81% of users interacting with AI daily and 96% expressing strong confidence in AI tools.
VIETNAMESE ENTERPRISES RACE TOWARDS AI ADOPTION
While Vietnam is rapidly emerging as an AI-ready economy with strong digital ambition, industry leaders caution that successful adoption depends less on new technologies and more on the capability to govern, operate, and integrate them. At the Vietnam Future Economy Summit by Bloomberg Businessweek Vietnam on November 14, experts stressed that AI must be applied with measurable value and strategic purpose – or risk becoming a costly and ineffective investment.
